Style and painting techniques (media/supports, etc…)

Sometimes Angelo Arrigo comes up with his sudden inspirations, and consequently he uses any canvasses he could find available where he is. Sometimes he has the time to choice carefully his media/supports. It depends on each specific circumstance.
“I mainly prefer to use acrylics, enamel acrylate spray, and maybe sometimes in the future also sumi-e”.
“My style of painting does not take aim at technically perfect works; instead, I focus myself on the potential impact able to provoke ….. even a simple pleasant feeling of relief, that I wish to deliver/offer to all of you, enjoying my fine art works, visual art projects, etc. . . Actually my style finds is roots into an unforgettable event in my life. In fact it was on june 1, 1994 at the auditorium ”Alma Mater” of the University of Bologna, Italy, when SGI President, Daisaku Ikeda, delivered his speech titled “Leonardo’s Universal Vision and the Parliament of Humanity: Thoughts on the Future of the United Nations.”, where I have had the honour of being present at the conference as well as the moment when the Rector Fabio Roversi Monaco conferred the special ring of a doctorate from the University of Bologna.” “Ever since I decided to take as example for the development of my personal life, right this innovative portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, delivered from Daisaku Ikeda.”
“I think I could describe the style used by me as a continuous flight of my sudden inspirations. I often leave un-painstaking spaces, and intentionally, I leave out the technical preciseness and many details. I prefer incomplete or empty strokes, without any colour. Alternatively, I create objects/images in the shade, or anyway, they are shrouded in some context which is eithertoo dark, too clear, too faded, or even too dirty, etc… “
“I do so, in order to leave the viewer free to imagine, dream and interpret my artworks, being inspired by the incomplete. I have a predilection for the idea of reaching the completeness through incomplete strokes of painting.I always refuse the idea to trap our perception of things into a finite and predictable pictorial composition. I am always stimulated from the desire to astonish harmoniously.”
“Even now, I am intentionally avoiding any sort of definition or explanation of details, right (in order)to not lose such characteristic. “
“It doesn’t depend on either the mastery or the technique, instead it comes from which life-condition the artist is experiencing while he/she is creating his /her artwork. How much egoism/egocentrism/anger/hypocrisy/insincerity/ avidity/narrow-mindedness. . ., or how much altruism/joy/sincerity/broadmindedness/humanitarian vision/ etc. . ., is there in the artist’s feeling?”

Hahnemühle describe the characteristics of acrylics and sumi-e as it follows:

Acrylic Painting

Acrylic painting is currently one of the most popular painting techniques. Its special attraction lies in the fact that acrylic colours stand out due to their brilliancy, a velvety gloss and the fact that they are lightfast and resistant to ageing. The artist’s creativity knows no bounds as the colours are easy to handle. Pigment can be applied to acrylic papers thinly to resemble watercolour or more thickly to resemble oil paint.
Acrylic paint is a fast drying paint containing pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer resin. It lends itself readily to glazing, painting to completion and texturing. Acrylic paint offers many advantages: it is virtually odourless, non-allergic and water-soluble. It is also quick-drying as the water is extracted and can therefore be easily painted over. The drying process is irreversible, i.e. once the paint is dry it cannot be removed with water. It has a matte to semi matte sheen but glossy surfaces can also be produced by applying a finish.
The consistency of acrylic paint is relatively viscous, it can be used directly from the tube without adding water or it can be thinned with a lot of water and used for watercolour.
A further painting technique is the combination of acrylic and oil paints. First of all a base or background is applied using acrylic paint. Once this has dried the actual picture is painted using oil paints. The major advantage of acrylic paints is that you can prime almost any type of paper to accept oil paints. Experts for example use finely structured watercolour painting bases and prime them 1-2 times with white acrylic paint thereby achieving an attractive oil paint proof base once it has dried.
Brushes (synthetic brushes) and tools should not be left to dry out as acrylic paint cannot be removed once it has dried. Soap and water are sufficient to clean the brushes and tools.

Sumi-e

Sumi-e painting evolved in the 5th century from Chinese calligraphy. The main subjects are taken from nature. In the 12th century Zen monks brought the technique to Japan where even today Sumi-e painting has a decisive influence on lifestyle. Translated “Sumi” means “black ink” and “e” means both “path” and “painting”. The style of brush painting is both a simple and yet highly aesthetic drawing made of powerful, mostly chasing and rapidly executed lines.
Patience and inner harmony are essential in brush painting to capture the spirit of the subject. Sumi-e is therefore not only an Asian painting technique but also a form of spiritual relaxation therapy and is becoming increasingly popular in Europe.

Enamel acrylate spray on canvas

The enamel acrylate spray appliances are small spray cans that use compressed air to apply colour to a surface. Spray cans are multi-faceted and fascinating to work with. Graphic designers, illustrators and model builders use them. They are used to paint walls, cars, ceramics, furniture, canvases, textiles, etc…. In the art world this technique is used for example in Pop Art, in photorealism or in science fiction art.
This technique can easily be combined with all other painting techniques. Sometimes it is much quicker and more precise than other painting techniques. All colours are actually available. The most common are finely pigmented airbrush colours with an acrylic base. They are water-soluble, suitable for almost any surface, virtually odourless and non-toxic. These colours can be used to achieve wonderful colour gradations.
Spray appliances offer just as many creative opportunities as brushes, sometimes more than brushes.
